We are launching a new series of interviews with our members, a space designed to highlight the professionals and organizations that are part of the CCCE, as well as their vision and contribution to strengthening relations between both countries.
In this first feature, we speak with Manuel Vega, CEO of Atlético Ottawa and a member of the Chamber, who has a solid background in international sports management.
Linked to the Atlético de Madrid group, he took on the leadership of the Canadian club with the aim of consolidating its structure, strengthening its identity, and contributing to the growth of football in Canada.
After just over a year at the helm, Atlético Ottawa has achieved a historic milestone by becoming Canadian Premier League champions for the first time, the result of a project built on teamwork, professionalization, and a strong connection with its community.

1) After more than a year leading Atlético Ottawa, how would you assess this period and the club’s evolution under your direction?
It has been a very positive year and one full of learning. When I arrived, one of the main objectives was to consolidate the club’s structure and strengthen our identity both on and off the pitch, building on the positive work done in previous years. I believe we have made significant progress in sporting performance, in our relationship with the community, and in the professionalization of our operations. The club’s growth has been evident on many levels, especially in the excitement generated around the team within the city.
2) Atlético Ottawa was crowned Canadian Premier League champion for the first time in its history. What key factors led to this success?
The title is the result of very solid collective work. From day one, we have worked to build a culture based on commitment, discipline, and ambition (effort is non-negotiable). We have had a highly committed coaching staff and group of players, as well as the support of an organization aligned around a common goal. In addition, the support of our fans and the Ottawa community has been essential in driving the team throughout the season.
3) How has being part of the Atlético de Madrid group influenced the club’s sporting and organizational growth in Canada?
Being part of the Atlético de Madrid group provides a very solid foundation and clear direction. It allows us to share knowledge, processes, and a defined sporting culture, as well as to generate synergies between clubs. Beyond the name, it is about transmitting a way of working and values that have been key to the group’s success in different markets. This helps us continue growing as a club within a football landscape like Canada’s, which is still developing and expanding.
4) Canadian football is experiencing a period of expansion, with growing national and international interest. What role does Atlético Ottawa aim to play in this development?
Football in Canada is going through a very exciting period, with significant growth and opportunities. Our goal is to be one of the clubs driving that development, not only by competing at the highest level but also by contributing to the growth of the league, developing local talent, and strengthening the connection between the club and the community. We want Atlético Ottawa to become a benchmark within Canadian football and a strong, long-term project.
5) As a member of the Canada-Spain Chamber of Commerce, what opportunities do you see to strengthen economic and business relations between both countries through sport?
Sport, and football in particular, has a tremendous ability to connect cultures, businesses, and communities. I believe there are many opportunities to generate collaboration between companies in both countries, from sponsorships to projects in innovation, infrastructure, or sports development. The growth of football in Canada also opens the door for Spanish companies to find new opportunities in this market, and vice versa.
6) What are Atlético Ottawa’s next strategic objectives after winning the league title?
Winning a title is very important, but it also comes with the responsibility to keep growing. Our objective now is to consolidate the club as one of the league’s leading teams, maintain sporting competitiveness, and continue developing our fan base and presence within the community. We also want to keep strengthening the club’s structure so that success is not a one-off achievement, but part of a sustainable long-term project.
